I intended the newest post to be a DWTS re-cap, chronicling Charlie's exit, along with the position of DW fans - who henceforth should be called "Meryl Davis fans" - that Amy Purdy only sat on a table and kicked during her jazz routine with Derek Hough. A recap requires looking at all of the dances and cutting them up, and I haven't yet been up to the challenge this week. I hope to get it done tonight or tomorrow.

Until then, these observations: Meryl Davis fans on fsu were bright-siding Charlie's departure by saying at least now they don't have to split their votes. Right, because they weren't voting for only Meryl this entire time. What they mean is, "At least now I can vote for only Meryl with a clear conscience." and "Charlie would want me to vote for Meryl. Even when he was still on the show, you know he'd have wanted us voting for Meryl."

They think he's Scott Moir with this. Along those lines, one of the reasons Charlie didn't get enough votes was that he was unable to form the white hot, seething chemistry with his partner that Meryl enjoys with Maks, that Meryl enjoys with him, and with every other man who crosses Meryl's path. Charlie, poor thing, just doesn't work with anyone but Meryl.

I guess we kind of already knew that Davis White's following was actually a following for Meryl And The Guy Who Validates Her, but now it's confirmed. To be fair, for quite a long time, fsu's VM fans seemed to really be fans of Scott Moir and Whatever Girl Helps Him Get Gold, if It's Tessa, Okay, Even Though Her Style Is too White Bread, But We Have Other Candidates if Tessa's Shins Don't Improve. Many of those VM fans did later came to appreciate Tessa as a skating talent in her own right, even if it took something as out-of-its mind brilliant as Carmen to achieve this realization. It shouldn't have taken Carmen.

That's my DWTS two cents until I look at the actual dances. For now, it seems that St. Louis Rams draftee Michael Sam is doing a reality show, and writer Drew Magary of deadspin.com says this:
They can call it a "documentary" series even though it's a dirty little secret that even acclaimed documentary filmmakers will coach subjects and have them do multiple takes. They can do all that and it still won't scrub away the fact that reality shows are fucking beat and no one worth a shit bothers to do them.

This isn't a football issue, or even a matter of distraction. This is me just saying that a reality show is always a transparent and pathetic exercise in self-branding.
My only quibble is "dirty little secret." It's not a secret.

Here's the killer quote, the core reason VM and their sham suck:
He is another packaged product being sold to us at heavy markup—commodified smarm at best, and at worst something downright cynical, something that leverages real emotions in service of a marketing strategy. No one wants to find out that Lou Gehrig's farewell speech was copywritten by a dude at Pfizer.
Virtue and Moir leverage their chemistry in service of their agenda, which encompasses more than their marketing strategy, but includes their marketing strategy. Their chemistry derives from the real, private, intimate connection which exists between them in every form in which intimacy is understood, that is the foundation of their relationship, marriage, and family. Who has that kind of authentic connection with somebody, and monetizes it? Who'd corrupt it? It's tempting fate, it's not showing appreciation for how rare it is, how valuable, and, of course, I don't mean marketplace valuable. Assessing it as a commodity degrades its intrinsic value. Scott and Tessa, the man and woman who share this connection, also stand apart from it, evaluate it as a commodity, then deploy it as product and brand extensions. They're prostituting the core of who they are.* That's the reason the conduct of the sham is grotesque.

Of course their chemistry is a component of what they do on the ice. But we're not talking about on the ice.

what reality shows really are

Anybody who watched Virtue and Moir's reality show, Tessa and Scott, should click that link and read that article. Magary's summation of what reality shows are is fact. Nobody is obliged to share his low opinion or negative judgment, but nobody should delude themselves that reality shows are anything other than what he describes.

Remember that Tessa and Scott took their reality show a step further. Michael Sam, after all, is not pretending not to be gay in his reality show. He's not pretending he's actually a tennis player. But what Tessa and Scott have in common with him and other reality show stars is this:
It does him no favors to be part of this, but here we are anyway, and everything feels just a little icky. Our first openly gay player in the NFL is a total abstraction, a commercial for himself, an actor named Michael Sam playing the role of "Michael Sam" on The Michael Sam Show.
I also liked this:
Now that Sam has a reality show, can anyone believe with 100 percent confidence that the kiss he shared with his boyfriend on camera last Saturday was a real and true moment? They probably had a dress rehearsal. Sam was probably standing on a taped X to make sure he hit his mark
If Tessa and Scott actually had followed VM as they prepared for the Sochi Olympics, that would have been a project worth doing, and worth watching. That's not what we got.

Finally, turning to another subject: I believe Tessa Virtue is pregnant again, mostly because I know she was pregnant last time, and I haven't gone blind since then.

I don't *know* that she's pregnant again, but in future, and until further notice, whenever I refer to Xygot Moir, that is my considered opinion, not "know for a fact." Here's the disclaimer now, because I'm not going to repeat it every time it's mentioned, which I don't expect will be often. This blog is not about "let's find out everything we can about Virtue and Moir's private life." Since inception, the blog has told two true things about Scott and Tessa. They're married, and they're parents. The blog has chronicled and examined their behavior with fans, their marketing and their manipulation, with these facts in mind.

However, I do look with interest upon some of the comments that outright mock the idea that Tessa could be pregnant again. The mindset seems to be that married with one child is okay, but it's ludicrous to believe they'd get pregnant again while following the precise template they used last time.**

A lot of Virtue Moir fans invent lines and boundaries in their heads, then expect Virtue and Moir to operate inside them. Nope. It's only in your heads. I'd take a look at the past lines and boundaries fans (including me) made up in their heads about Virtue and Moir, and consider how Virtue and Moir merrily blew past every one of them. One might even say flaunted how they blew past them, seeing as the reality show tipped us off to how closely Virtue and Moir monitor the theories and assumptions of their online fans. There's been little correlation between many of our assumptions about Virtue and Moir, and what Virtue and Moir actually do.

Not being pregnant doesn't make them a little less married, and a little less parents to the child they already have. A second pregnancy doesn't exponentially compound their lies, making Virtue and Moir even harder to take. They're already massive liars.

Fans' ability to digest what Virtue and Moir do seems to occur by degrees. Okay, they're in a relationship - but not married. Okay - married! But not parents. Married and parents - but not pregnant again. It seems to come from the same unexamined instincts that made people perceive Scott/Jessica as an actual triangle with Tessa in some respects, even as they accepted it was a sham.

Of course they'd have a second kid. And a third kid. At this stage of their lies, my own personal line and boundary, made up completely in my head out of thin air, has come to this: funerals. If either of them died, the survivor would no longer publicly pretend he or she hadn't been married to the one that's gone.

I made it up. I can't imagine they'd pretend any longer if that happened. But just because I/we can't imagine it, doesn't mean they wouldn't go there.

*Most professional or Olympic-level athletes are also brands. The Shibutanis are also a brand. Look at what the Shibs do and what Virtue and Moir do.The Shibutanis aren't prostitutes. If you have sex for money, you're a prostitute. If you take something intimate and private - not pretend intimate and private, but actually intimate and private, and brand it and sell it while it remains who you are in you're private life, you've just whored that out.

**Same way that accepting that Scott would ickily act out on social media with one sham girlfriend is easy enough, but taking on a successor sham girlfriend and ickily acting out on social media with V.2? No. It was so obviously against the grain the first time, they'd never authorize a sequel.

  1. Magary does a good job of calling out BS, and I agree with everything he wrote about athletes and reality TV shows. It still blows my mind that any fan of V/M believes what they were watching on that reality show was an accurate, open representation of their personal lives. "Commodified smarm at best" and "something that leverages real emotions in the services of a marketing strategy" pretty much nails it. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir played the roles of Fake Tessa Virtue and Fake Scott Moir and beat everyone over the head with the message that was the real, genuine them. Not so much.

As for DWTS, Amy Purdy has been the best dancer on the show all season long. She has incredible natural talent and musical sensibility. Her use of her core, extension, flow, etc., is tops, and anyone claiming her disability is some kind of unfair advantage is an idiot. I also think James Maslow could be a dark horse winner. I like how he's grown over the season.

  2. We always knew the VM show was nothing but crap.

Can't help feeling disgusted all over again at Scott's canoodling scenes with a fake GF when I read what the writer from deadspin.com says....coached scenes and multiple retakes. They all prostituted themselves. For the sake of....what? The show was not only a huge disappointment, it also made me lose so much respect for Tessa and Scott. Their "Brand" STINKS.

  3. From the article you quoted: http://deadspin.com/michael-sam-is-doing-a-reality-show-and-that-sucks-1576793287

    This quote:
"No one escapes this shit with his dignity intact."

The way Tessa and Scott manage their PR and their fake-life-designed-for-fans suggests they really believe none of their shenanigans will have any negative repercussions. How is it these people who have such sweet interactions with fans during meet&greets can dump such garbage on fans all the time? I believe the writer of this article is correct. Tessa and Scott cannot escape with their dignity intact. It's a sad and pathetic trainwreck we're all witnessing.

    1. Here's how it appears to me:

      1. They believe they have some circle of protection (bubble) around the "real them" even as they commodify what is created by the real them, which is the chemistry and the connection. But it doesn't work that way. The chemistry is real. So is the connection. They can lie about the context in which it exists all they like; they are still taking something that goes to the very heart of who they are and turning it into product. That affects who they are. There's no circle of protection.

      2. They cross boundaries for sport. If we were all more naive than we actually are, we'd think they're doing it to bolster the credibility of the sham. Because fans don't think a man in love with his wife, the dad of a little girl, would act out this way on the public record, and they don't believe a decent wife and mother would get on board either. Ergo, those who think Scott and Tessa are married parents must be mistaken. It's a gambit, IOW. The way a poker player with nothing in his hand ups the ante to out bluff the others at the table.

I don't think that's what's going on.I think it's a middle finger, nothing more. They know we know they know we know.

What happens when the protective bubble is gone (some day one or some of these people around them will talk - mark my words) and their attitude of giving fans the middle finger wears thin?

Right now they're at a height of popularity. These things have a way of dissipating over time. Then what?

      Delete
    3. In this instance, when I used the expression "bubble", I really meant that it seems to me they believe they can accomplish both things - keep what is between them sacred and personal, and whore it out at the same time. As long as they present that thing between them - the obvious connection - in a fake context, they're somehow not corrupting anything real. It's as contorted as it gets, but that's what I meant.

I don't agree. I think if you take something real and genuine, and commodify it, you've damaged it. I don't know how the damage manifests itself but I think corruption always damages. There's something chilling about how the two of them are able to live in and experience what's between them, while simultaneously standing apart from it and saying "Look at this thing between us that people pick up on, that attracts them. How can we market it?"

Just reduce it to a normal person in love with their significant other. And picture that normal person in love trying to figure out how to HAWK her love in order to make a buck.

On the ice is one thing. Ice dance is part of the sports/entertainment complex, and has no point without an audience, and of course who Virtue and Moir are to each other is going to inform how they skate and at times what they skate. It's an abstraction, though. It "informs" the skating, the way any skater's personal attributes obviously informs how they move and perform.

Virtue and Moir sell it off the ice. The storyline they chose to perform in the actual episodes of "Tessa and Scott" might have been sour and off-putting, but the promotion for "Tessa and Scott" used their connection as a come on.

  4. Wheres child #1? Has anybody ever seen child #1? Any photos? Who has child full time as they travel the world? Its curious that in 3 years no one has come forward with at least one photo. Or did i miss that one photo..?

    1. Surely a random photo never showing up on twitter is proof positive a child doesn't exist, right?

This kind of post perfectly fits what the blogger pointed out above. It's inventing lines and boundaries someone decides must be crossed in order to believe something is true or exists. The real world doesn't work that way, sorry. Fans/the public see probably 2% of V/M's life, ever. That includes when they travel around the world to events/shows/competitions. It's certainly not difficult to send the few who monitor twitter on wild goose chases. Shit, most of the time they send themselves off on them without any help from V/M. All it takes is an innocuous photo of Andrew Poje hugging Tessa Virtue around the waist (a pose he's participated in with almost every skater from the DSC over the years) and they flip out and decide Tessa must not be with Scott after all. When fans are that easy to dupe or that stupid, how can you not understand how easy it is for V/M to easily move about without it becoming news? Twitter helps protect celebrities, it doesn't put them at greater risk to be outed.

    2. 604 i never mentioned twitter so dont know why u are...there are plenty of ways a photo should have appeared by now. Its just common sense. Well to the rest of the world it is.

Surely a random photo never showing up proves there IS a child, right? Surely never seeing her 9 months pregnant IS proof too...

There is a sense of anger and hostility about being "duped". Repeatedly. If you were not "duped" and have it all figured out in your own head, then why so angry. Why put into print and out in public over and over again? Revenge? So much anger about being "duped" when in fact you have it all figured out. So why not move on. Get a life. Carry on. Its an obsession. Uncontrolled. Its personal. In your head only.

C ya...this us getting way too boring for me. I thought it was an informative source to some degree about skating. Not so much. The skating part is the facade. The rest is all slanderous bullshit.

The blogger has never insinuated anything is personal. The criticism of V/M here has always been about how they completely bastardize their professional image and fob it off on others, possibly for sport. Nobody has to agree with criticism of V/M's harebrained "marketing schemes," but it seems to me it's the ones who don't like this blog that get personally offended and throw temper tantrums. If that wasn't the case, they'd make better counterarguments rather than using name calling or passive aggressive efforts to kill discussion.

Even those who don't believe in a sham knew this show was bs and had nothing to do with VM's real personalities.

    1. Well, the personas they decided to present were self-defeating (their skating was declining? They're not getting the job done?) and ridiculous. Tessa's persona as the hapless, easily intimidated, self-flagellating "perfectionist" turned in on itself and started looking arrogant. It was so freaking controlling, insistent, so Tess-splainy and condescending. It was a turn off. Nobody wanted to see that girl. Scott's self-presentation as the good old boy who just had to show and tell that he was getting laid was a turn off, his smug and self-satisfied routine was a turn off, and his TMI was a turn off. The show's bumpers kept acting as if they were going to show us these charming figure skaters with wonderful chemistry, and instead they showed us two insufferable, oblivious, immature boors who couldn't communicate, got on each other's nerves, couldn't wait til the career was over so they could be apart, and, as a bonus, ran down their skating just weeks out from the Olympics.

That appealed to who? No VM fan out there.

      Delete
    2. V/M's schizophrenic portrayal of a subject (themselves) could give Lindsay Lohan's a run for her money.

Tessa's false persona was unlikeable, whiny, and ridiculously self-defeating (it went well beyond the norm of any athlete with her success rate and talent). Scott's was unlikeable, assholish, and completely unbelievable. They preached how badly they wanted to win the Olympics again and TOTALLY botched how to even somewhat realistically script "hardships" or "struggles" they needed to overcome to get there. i.e, the "WE HAVE TROUBLE CONNECTING" bullshit. No one buys it because it's BULLSHIT. The same bullshit they tried to sell after Vancouver when they did a half-assed rewrite of history but conveniently forgot (or did not care) the history they were trying to claim never happened was on video and in writing for the entire fucking world to see.

The entire premise of their show was to further their bullshit platonic storyline. If it wasn't, they would have scripted actual realistic struggles to overcome rather than unbelievable ones meant to further convince fans of the lie they aren't together. For fucks sake, they brought in Jean-Marc Genereaux to "teach" Tessa and Scott how to connect to one another as a man and woman. As though they suddenly "lost" that and needed to be taught how to touch each other like pre-pubescents who have no idea how to flirt.

It's no wonder V/M are publicly vacillating and trying to distance themselves from the show somewhat, claiming they'll watch it "someday" or "never" and that the producers may have presented them as less than accurate. They don't like to take responsibility for anything. They either pretend it never happened, or when they can't get away with that move, they blame somebody else. The show was a clusterfuck of V/M's own making. It was their dumbass need to make their "brand" all about their fake platonic selves dialed up to 11.

    3. Here are the main plot points of "Tessa & Scott." Every. Single. Episode.

      1. Oh no! Suddenly we're not connecting on the ice! This is hurting our skating!
      2. Oh no! Suddenly we're not connecting off the ice though this also isn't a problem since we don't spend time with each other off the ice because we get on each other's nerves (hello, schizophrenia).
      3. Scott is struggling to juggle his personal life and his "girlfriend" with his skating life.
      4. Meryl and Charlie's scores! Related to our struggles to connect, which in turn hurts our skating. Eek!

      That's...about it, really.

    4. They had no charisma on that show. No personal charm. They did everything they could to stomp out the chemistry upon which the entire production was premised. That's why fans and everyone else want to forget it happened. They were both unappealing, whiny, and kind of stupid.

      Delete
    5. They definitely don't want to take responsibility. They're the epitome of the right hand pretends it doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Of course they don't watch. That's part of the pretend.

They suckered that overly credulous free-lancer, Amanda Sage, into writing that the reality show "imposed" a narrative that Scott and Tessa's relationship was charged with underlying tensions, when watching any episode for even five minutes makes it obvious this narrative was imposed by Scott and Tessa. That's all either of them bleated in the talking heads, how tense, how distant, how difficult, how confusing, how they couldn't communicate. Shit, Tessa looked as if she were considering pretending she was physically afraid of Scott.

I, too, lost a lot of respect for them. As Marina participated in the reality show, I imagine she was aware of the narrative - I least I hope they didn't sucker her into cooperating, only for her to find out they were questioning her loyalty. That's a stab in the back for a woman who makes her living coaching skaters from all over the world. Assholes. They may disclaim their reality show, but they had no problem resurrecting the Marina narrative after Sochi, since they weren't going to address the root problem, which is the ISU and Skate Canada. They're good at kicking the dog.

What BS. They can pretend all they want that the editing turned out to be less than accurate. Their voiceovers are forever on record. Their own faces and voices instructing the viewers how to interpret the scenes and telling their "stories" (lack of connection, Scott's hot&heavy relationship with Cassandra, getting on each other's nerves, skating declining, etc etc etc - all of it beyond irritating for the viewer, seeing as we know IT'S ALL LIES).

I know. I hate it when someone says the words that came out of my mouth in fact came out of my mouth. 8. I can certainly believe that with all the stress of an Olympic year, there were some fights, some difficult moments. Somehow the show went so overboard and fake with it all that it wasn't remotely believable.

In their zeal to present themselves as "very different people" who couldn't possibly be in a relationship (but maybe in the future if they can overcome all of the obstacles between them!), they portrayed themselves as two people nobody would ever root for. Well, maybe a few 14 year olds obsessed over them for a few months. I don't think the reality show helped their brand much, something anyone could have predicted.

You're right. Every single plot point revolved around the theme of convincing viewers theirs was a platonic relationship. Not even passionately-platonic, as they've attempted to describe at other times. In the show, they were so platonic they couldn't really stand to be around each other and they wanted absolutely nothing to do with each other's off-ice lives. And yes, that was the entire theme of the show. In the process, they were unappealing douchebags.

    15. Yes, which is why the show was such a clusterfuck.

Even though they're determined to lie to the public about being married with a child (and another one possibly on the way), V/M cannot hide that they are in love, it's very visible, and is a central component of who they each are as people. That doesn't make their connection "too unique to understand or explain." It's the reality for everybody in a happy relationship or marriage.

What they decided to do on the show was take that natural chemistry with one another that is a core element of who they are as individuals and cram it into a boxed "platonic!" storyline. It was destined to fail from the beginning because it required V/M to act as these two dimensional, overly stereotyped, fake characters who were never believable because they stripped both of them of much of who they actually are as individuals. It was like watching V/M try and fail to walk around on one leg for the cameras but claim they were walking on two the entire time. Add in the fake girlfriend and stupid canned dialogue and voiceovers on top of that and the absurdity went off the charts.

      Delete
    16. In a recent interview, V/M were asked if they always say "we," even if they're somewhere by themselves or talking to strangers. They answered that yes, they do.

That's how happily in love people generally act and speak. It's a small, but perfect example of how being in a successful, happy relationship impacts people as individuals. There are lots of little small things. How people touch each other, or look, smile, laugh, etc. It's all very NORMAL.

V/M are great skaters because they do not deny who they are to one another on the ice, they let it permeate their performances in lots of different ways. When they try to deny it off the ice, it's not believable because all of those little small things are still visible. In the show, they not only denied who they are, they also tried to act out the parts. They were terrible at it.

  7. What's interesting is that Ice, Sweat and Tears was initially meant to be solely about V/M, it would have been done by real documentary filmakers and would have aired on CBC. My guess is that they balked at having to present V/M's brand, since creating a total hoax isn't exactly the best career move in their field. So V/M had to turn to the only people who'd ever do it, reality show producers.

I keep wondering where all the sane people are? Surely someone must have told them it wasn't a good idea? Hell, Marina seemed to have a lot of influence over them, did she not try to change their minds? She could even have put her foot down and said no, considering the power she has at that rink. Or what about friends, family, skaters like Chan and W/P? Sometimes being a good friend means telling them they're acting like idiots. They're all enablers.

    2. Of course Marina isn't their mother and she can't control everything they do outside the rink. But you'd think she would want V/M to be as focused as possible in an Olympic year, acting out for the cameras has to be at least somewhat distracting. And since part of it happened at "her" rink and during competitions, she'd have a right to say no. Besides, she not only agreed but also participated in the show. I'd classify anyone who participated as an enabler. I truly respect the Shibs for not appearing in the show.

      Delete
    3. Marina being one of the people to go along with or enable V/M's lying is another reason I don't buy the stupid assessment V/M has/had little to no agency in that relationship. D/W participated in the show, too. They knew how they were going to be portrayed.

    4. Of course Chan and W/P would help them sham. Going against SC might hurt their own program. I remember when it was common knowledge that W/P are a couple but that got shoved back into the closet somewhere along the way too

      Delete
    5. You think SC forced them to participate? I doubt it. SC gave up on VM a long time ago.

      Delete
    6. I don't think SC gave up on VM (and SC is certainly heavily involved in the sham and likely part of it's instigation). I think it's that SC doesn't give a shit about their skaters and is more interested in their own political ambitions within the sport and the ISU.

No one is forcing WP and Chan to participate.

One thing I find interesting is that before VM and WP came along, DL and WL were public about being a couple. You have VM and their sham. 7:01 is right that it used to be common knowledge that WP are a couple, but then along came the house of platonic passion narrative. It's not anything near what VM have pulled, but it's puzzling to me. VM and WP were followed by PI, who have thankfully stayed far away from a platonic passion narrative, and I hope continue to stay away from it.

    7. Considering P/I confirmed to a magazine that they're together, and considering how much they seem to enjoy their pre- and post-skate PDA, I think it's safe to say P/I are not going to get involved in that sort of nonsense.

Probably the same folks who claim TV can't be pregnant. Watch the CBC interview from November 2010 (during the "rift" no less) and compare her face to photos from SOI in May 2014. I have little doubt she is expecting again. Chocolate doesn't make your face that round.

    1. I think those people take on a kind of voluntary blindness. They want to believe V/M would never lie to them. Except V/M lie to their faces all the time. However, they also say things to them like "we want to share this with our fans," "this is the real us," and "we just want to be remembered as good people." That's what those fans cling to. "These are nice people who appreciate our support!"

Yes, I'm sure V/M appreciate that support. They also take advantage of it to sell their lies.

      Delete
    2. They seem to have a weird ethical system, VM and the Moirs. If nice people lie, then it's not bad. Who you are, not what you do, counts. It's Tessa and Scott! It can't be bad!

That's how all of this comes off. We're nice people. We're great people. We're friendly, polite, considerate, patient (oh so so so so patient, we are!). So - what? Hoaxing the public doesn't count? Marketing a massive lie doesn't count? Acting out with a woman not your wife, while you have a small innocent daughter who is going to see all of this one day won't matter, cause it's you?

There is no valid ethical/religious/moral system that says who you are determines the rightness or wrongness of your behavior. Your actions determine the rightness or wrongness of your behavior. Not your personality. Not your demeanor. Not your identity. That's some arcane medieval concept, that if the King does it, it's automatically moral. Virtue and Moir seem to be working hard to implicitly make that sale. It's us! So it's okay!

      Delete
    3. I think it's more that VM have a completely warped idea of marketing and would try to argue that it's OK to lie in that context, in order to build a brand. Basically you shouldn't lie to people, except when you're trying to sell them something. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

      Delete
    4. 7:32 -- Gee, I wonder where VM got that idea of marketing.

I wonder if they would ever be able to actually listen to a professional/ethical marketing guru and change course. Their warped ideas are so ingrained, who knows if they could ever get thrown out (as they should have the moment they heard about these crappy marketing theories).

      Delete
    5. In a conversation had with someone who knows about pr and marketing, they made the point that a person can have the best pr guru in the world, but it does no good if that person isn't willing to listen and follow advice. At this point, I don't think VM would listen or do what was advised.

The conversation wasn't about VM, but I thought it applied.

    8. Fans freaking out because Tessa and Scott might have not dined together on Tessa's birthday are ridiculous. Since when is a 2-hour slice in one's day a measure of what's real? Especially in light of the fact that VM are very aware of the chatter concerning them. No way in hell are they going to " be a couple" in public. As long as their official story is platonic, they will go to great lengths to hide the real VM.

      Delete
    9. The Tumblr meltdown over the separate dining was special...I mean really, these people *smh* I can't decide whether to feel sorry for them or feel glad I'm not that stupid. As for the tweet...I wouldn't be so sure that wasn't a plant - less than forty tweets in two years, a third of them about skating? Call me cynical.....

      Delete
    10. The social media meltdown of the past ~24 hours has been quite special. I suspect like 2:57 that the Scott at dinner tweet last night may have been a plant. It's also helpful to remember that there is no event that they won't use to further the sham, including family weddings and births (poor Quinn's was used as a shaming opportunity). Using Tessa's birthday to sham would be par for the course.

      Delete
    11. 2:57 PM its not about "be a couple" in public anymore. not being with your so called platonic best friend for seventeen years on their birthday makes you look like a shit friend. friends dont do this to their friends. also you cant excuse everything as being a "plant"

Of course friends for 17 years should be expected to be comfortable together for a Birthday dinner. For me, the fact that they cannot portray a normal / platonic friendship for a special day, such as a Birthday, is in itself indicative of things being controlled. A set-up to further their fake narratives. They're freakish in the way they want to control the narrative to the point of ridiculousness. As if BFF for 17 years wouldn't spend a Birthday together. Please. They probably had their own private celebration and then go out in public separately. God forbid anyone should even *think* they're a couple. If they weren't trying to hide something they would be much more normal on these occasions.

    13. Do people get bent out of shape when Davis White, Pechalat Bourzat, Bobrova Soloviev, or Cappellini LaNotte don't go out together for their birthdays? If VM are supposed to be platonic, what's different about them? Would you be upset if a police officer or law firm partner went out for dinner without their work partners that they've been working with for decades?

Since this is what they are pretending to be (not married, which is what they are), it makes perfect sense to me that they don't go out alone together for non-work reasons such as a birthday. You know if they did, everyone would be buzzing that "maybe, finally..."

Tessa appears awkward and robotic when anything is related to her relationship with Scott. Other than that, she's always looked more than comfortable in front of a camera or in any public speaking situation.

I think people mistake her deer-in-headlights demeanor, or the OTT 'splaining' whenever the topic of Tessa-Scott comes up, as not being comfortable in public. What she is deathly afraid of is anyone finding out she's sleeping with Scott. Other than that, all her public-speaking is perfectly at ease, charming and articulate.

I know y'all are still skeptical and I understand if you chose to be and that nothing can change your mind. But I've been convinced. Ever heard of Thomas the apostle? His claim to fame came when he refused to acknowledge Jesus' resurrection as he needed to touch Jesus' wounds to be convinced. If y'all at least watched Lost you'll know that he ended up being convinced and understand that we will all be convinced sooner or later. All of us - it will eventually happen. In any story in any context we will all be convinced sooner or later. Even if stories can get misinterpreted and taken out of context as they are passed around. The issue at hand is just because there isn't any empirical evidence doesn't mean its absolutely positively, 110% false. As the old saying goes - where there is smoke there's fire.

      Delete
    4. 12.33 You've been convinced by the blog only right? No proof, no first hand knowledge just what is called here logic. Delete
    5. I actually have proof, 4:04 a.m., and other participants here have proof via their own sources.

the fact that people think the tiny slice of what is reported on social media is "their off ice lives" shows incredible naivete.

      Delete
    6. No you don't. I've been reading blog for 2 years just for fun. The only proof you can give is 'I know that for a fact' and 'if you don't have proof it doesn't mean others don't'. There wasn't even a hint at how you got this information and how credible it is

      Delete
    7. 8:07, you're not the one who needs to assess its credibility. I am. A lot of people get this confused.

You're not reading this blog "for fun." You're reading it because you're obsessed. That's the self-protective disclaimer for anyone who wants to engage in something and feel superior at the same time, and it's transparant.

      Delete
    8. The obsession with "show me the proof" is also a tip-off of a few things. One of which is a narcissistic world view. The blog doesn't give a shit if any particular person comes here saying they're not convinced without proof, and yet countless people in the comments section seem to believe the blog's aim is to convince them personally. Back and forth I've gone in the comments section trying to understand why some comment participants persist in believing that my goal is to get them, personally, as individuals, to believe me. I don't care.

That never registers. They don't get it. That might be where the narcissism comes in. I'll engage to a point, but I don't CARE. If you don't get that distinction, can't help you.

It's so odd, people who come here trying to shame the blog into either revealing how it knows something, or trying to get the blog to shut up. They'd prefer the former, but when they fail, they go to the latter.

Towards that end, they tend to go towards imputing the mental health or social epitutude of the blogger - anything to imply that the very existence of the blog tells embarrassing things about the bloggER, and the reason they aim for embarrassment is they think if someone's embarrassed they'll shut up.

Such comments may as well skip all that shit and just say "shut up." The effect will be the same in the end, which is nothing. It has no effect.

These people are Exhibit 1 of how come Scott and Tessa have been able to jerk fans around for years. It's aimed towards people like this. And they don't see it.

      Delete
    9. I am convinced these people think Scott and Tessa have some kind of quasi relationship, and that when Scott pops up in what seems to be unsavory circumstances, they become agitated and start feeling as if Scott and Tessa are engaged in some sordid on and off clusterfuck dysfunctional semi-relationship that alternates high romance with Scott routinely blowing it all up on social media acting out with his friends and other women.

Nothing else accounts for the amount of ALL CAPS and ocs and page refreshing and hysteria.

A single ice dancer acting like a drunken idiot on Victoria Day? Not something that would cause somebody to get carpel tunnel refreshing the blog page. A single ice dancer sighted without her partner on her birthday Saturday? Ditto.

The heartbreak over Scott and Tessa once again demonstrating they can't possibly be together is causing all of this? Six plus years of this and people are still heartbroken? Really? Enough to lose their minds when Scott is seen at a bar without Tessa?

I don't think so. Again, I think they "quasi-know" but they can't understand it, and they're trying to make both things true - Scott and Tessa are together and not together, Scott and Tessa are committed and faithful except for when Scott blows it all up and trashes it on what looks like a wild weekend or Carribean vacation or Xmas /New Year's holiday.

I think people who demand proof are caught up in some sort of half-life emotional experience when they observe Scott and Tessa, and they want to be put out of their misery. These huge all caps declarations that THEY"RE NOT TOGETHER SHUT UP is an attempt to shut the door on all the agita and drama that they, ironically, thrive on and seek out (the fan, not Scott and Tessa). I think emotionally, they're actually caught in that half-life weirdness and just don't use any common sense whatsoever, and need to get out in the fresh air more, and need to look at what actual people do a little more.

This whole "Give me the proof or shut up!" is telling me about the poster in the comments section and what agitates them. It's not saying much about the blog, which has been around nearly three and a half years. If they just disbelieved the blogger, they wouldn't keep coming back. They want the proof, and apparently aren't able to beat back their emotions and agitation enough to make a decision for themselves about what to believe, and make that decision stick.

      Delete
    10. My (unasked for) advice, is learn to deal with not knowing. Unless you're a senior citizen, chances are in your lifetime you will know. Until then, if someone is unable to get it for themselves, or figure it out for themselves, then just decide it's not true and live with it. Or decide it is true and live with it.

I don't get why people can't do that? What do they think is going on - not with the blogger, but with Scott and Tessa? Surely they don't think we have here another Davis White. People wouldn't be so agitated if so. Without "proof", I've condemned these fans to their world of fan fiction theories?

      REALLY?

Those theories don't play out in real life.

They're either Davis White (platonic, friendly, longstanding) or they're together. I happen to know they're not just together, but married with a child, but if somebody doesn't have that information first hand and isn't comfortable with it, then the options are those two alone. Davis White - or together. The stuff in the middle is fan fiction bullshit. And neither of the common sensical options (platonic friends or romantic couple) should cause agitation for any fan. Certainly the blog shouldn't be driving them bananas.

      Delete
    11. In fairness, Scott and Tessa do everything they can to encourage the fan fiction theories, but do you really want to have your chain jerked by these two? REALLY? Look at them. Look at their "reality show." Do you really want to be the person that WORKS on?

I don't believe everything OC says or agree with it and sometimes I still have that feeling that what OC says might be misinformation. although what I have been informed is not much and I would like to know more.

    14. :) 12:39, my remarks weren't intended to slam anybody for spending a lot of time here - for heavens' sake, it's my blog! :)

I just want to call out those who want to have it both ways. Spend all of their time here, but pretending to look down on others who do, and on the fact that the blog exists. Their way out of it is to pretend it's "amusing." Nothing is that amusing. Especially if they truly believe Scott and Tessa aren't a couple. For real? Hang out constantly at a place where somebody is promoting a complete crock?

That's just these people letting themselves off the hook for their own obsessive behavior, and trying to hold themselves above the others who participate here, without tarnishing themselves. It's pitiful and the oldest internet gambit in the book.

Scott and Tessa are bad at pretending they're platonic. Some VM fans are bad at pretending they believe Scott and Tessa are platonic. If they believed that, this blog would hold no interest. It wouldn't be "amusing". The premise of the blog, in that case - that a couple of definitively platonic skaters are actually together - doesn't support three and a half years of entertainment. There's plenty of "crazy funny" (versus "funny ha ha") material all over the web without spending all of your time on a blog built on a lame premise. The blog hasn't offered any new information in three and a half years. The blog's primary "info" has been that Scott and Tessa are married with a kid. That's old news, but the blog is still here.

I've speculated about why those who scream that Scott and Tessa aren't together, still hang out on the blog, still try to coerce the proof out of the blog, and, failing that, try to shut the blog down, and I don't know if I've come near the truth. I believe that I'm right when I say, it sure isn't because these people actually believe what they pretend to believe - that Scott and Tessa are comfortably platonic and always have been. It seems to me they're living in a fan fiction universe where Scott and Tessa come thisclose to getting together, and then Scott goes wild with women and booze, and blows it. Repeat.Somehow, this continues to happen about twice a year for six plus years.

On a gut level, that's what I think these people think is going on. Because if they thought it was all about the blog saying they're together, and Scott and Tessa being platonic, they'd be over it by now and wouldn't act out on the blog.

I guess it's part of the blog's fate to absorb the reactions to Scott and Tessa's bullshit. The BLOG isn't the problem. Scott and Tessa's chain jerking and manipulation is the problem. Some of the biggest blog bashers are people who don't recognize that when their emotional reactions swamp their critical factors, they are modeling the exact fan type towards which this sham is aimed. Scott and Tessa ain't rocket scientists; they're primitive, and that's the sort of fans they can manipulate.

    15. I was pretty gobsmacked at the intensity of some Davis White fans on tumblr, who believe Davis White are some giant unacknowledged love story. As they tell it, and for reasons that sort of imitate four year-old Virtue Moir fan fic, Davis White haven't gotten around to admitting how much they're in love. But, after less than a week, I got the point. I haven't been back. I know Davis & White are platonic. I don't need to spend two years reading the fantasies and speculation of fans who wish they weren't, even though, if I had a malicious streak, some of it might be "entertaining." Not two years worth of entertaining. A week, maybe, while you take it in. Then you get the picture.

Just Scott and Tessa are critiqued on this blog, I'd like to look at/take a stab at critiquing those who write entire novels about how Scott and Tessa aren't together. If that's what people believe, why are they so eager to convince everybody else? It's been that way from the beginning. The preferred course of action is to forbid anyone from expressing the opinion that Scott and Tessa are together. Failing that, we get a treatise from somebody who claims connections or other inside scoop that Scott and Tessa aren't together.

I know that's bullshit. Somebody can write nineteen chapters, I still know it's bullshit. They're married. I say so here, on this blog. I don't travel all over the web, all over twitter, tumblr and message boards.

If you know it's a lie, and are comfortable that it is, you're not going to find the fantasy that it's true entertaining for two years or more.

It's almost as if they wear obnoxiousness like a badge of honor. They've got the chip on the shoulder.

    14. ^This^.

Also, as someone who has spent a lot of time in small-town and mid-size-city Ontario, I know that all-day drinking over the Victoria Day long weekend is something of a tradition there generally, and not just for the Moirs. As others have pointed out, this doesn't mean everyone heads out to be a drunk douchebag at a hockey game, but it does mean that a weekend of boozing is probably expected, if not wholeheartedly endorsed, in Moirville.

And really, this is exactly the kind of partying/hockey gaming/acting out that has historically been mobilized to support the sham. It's the whole two-birds-with-one-stone scenario that has been discussed here many times: Scott assures Moirville he's just like them (oh, the overcompensation...) and gets some pictures with the sham girlfriend at the same time. Even though there doesn't seem to be a particular sham candidate for this outing, it's still behaviour that supports the can't-possibly-be-a-married-father narrative (though as I said, and not that this excuses anyone, not least the Olympic medalist who professes to want to be a role model, but: Scott was most likely not the only drunk asshole who is also a husband and father in London this weekend).

Judging from some of the reactions here, Scott actually did have a relatively productive weekend: Moirville (presumably) assuaged, and fans utterly convinced he can't possibly be with Tessa if this is how he acts, and on her birthday weekend, no less. As ever, the WHAT ARE THEY WINNING question looms large, but S+T and Moirville probably think they are.

    3. These people are soothing their own agitation with this meltdown. They let themselves be pumped up and then deflated by Moirville. It's happened only twenty gazillion times in the past with similar patterns of "Can it be? Are they finally going to be together/come clean?" and then comes the huge, aggressive crushing of hopes. Cue meltdown.

Look how invested everybody is! Of course, they are going out of their way to get fans to notice what Scott is doing - twitter and instagram. Where is twitter and instagram at other times? Scott's a hermit? What about all the times they're not on tumblr, instagram, facebook? What are Scott and Tessa doing?

It's the height of stupidity - and vanity - to believe these people, at this stage, are simply living their real lives in public and their real lives happen to make its way to social media just in case the rest of us missed it, and it's always at strategic times in the calendar, and always to counterpoint something else. In this case, Tessa's birthday.

This also appears tied to the attempt by some fans to badger the blog and others into providing the "proof" that they want that Scott and Tessa are together. I suggest that they just pick a position and stick with it. If they think the blog is lying, then go ahead and believe Scott and Tessa aren't together. In which case, who gives a shit if a 26 year old single guy is out with his idiot friends acting like an asshole. What's it to you or to Tessa? What's it to you if a single woman appears in Vancouver on her birthday without her skating partner?

The reality, IMO, is people aren't convinced, but they're "sort of" convinced, so they think there's some ugly triangle going on. This goes back to Jessica.

Moirville enjoys its spring break-ish perogatives. Look up some of these people. What else do they have going on except their association with Scott Moir? I wouldn't put it that way except they all behave as if they have nothing else going on.

I don't think Scott has a drug problem. Alcohol - who can know. Moirs not only enjoy getting drunk, they enjoy putting their drunks on display on social media. Getting drunk, even shitfaced, doesn't make you an alcoholic. If you show it off, it does make you trashy, but I think they're proud of it. You know the mindset. It's contrarian. "We're not classy." and proudly so.

  16. I doubt Scott does cocain and if he would he probably wouldn't do it in public. Even Scott wouldn't be this dumb. Also most people have never seen anybody on coke, they can easily confuse the behavior of a drug addict and a drunk idiot.

His behavior is hardly surprising, he acted like this for years now. It's normal to Ilderton and the Moirs. Heck, even Alma looks and acts drunk most of the time. One could often think the Moirs are acting out every trailer park stereotype there is.
When he's away from Ilderton Scott is very different. Hyper and active but still considerate and well liked by most. As soon as he meets up with the hyenas of Moirville he has to show he's a real man, one that nobody could ever accuse of being gay because he does " manly " things for everyone to see.
That's what his family seems to expect him to do and for some reason Scott wants to live up to that.
It's not surprising to me that Tessa doesn't want to be associated with this crowd in public.

    3. Yeah, that's what I've been thinking, as well. He seems to be a better person with Tessa and away from his hometown. Getting drunk and having fun is one thing, being a disrespectful asshole (if what's reported is true) is something else - however much he may want to be "normal", he's not, people will always be watching because of who he is and what he's accomplished. Hope this is not a taste of things to come, as their competitive career winds down.

    4. Yes, but take into account it was her birthday weekend, and that means the other kind of overcompensation. It just amazes me that it's her birthday, she (may be) pregnant on top of that, and people expect Scott to lie low, and him acting out conspicuously proves the blog is lying about their marriage? This very post said don't draw lines for them in your head. They haven't changed the template in years and years.

Probably same as others who know for a fact they're married, I look at it differently. I guess if you "hope" they're married or want to believe but don't know, and you're the volatile type, you can easily get yanked back and forth by this shit. The way I look at it is, they're married. If Scott wants to go out and hook up with girls in front of the twitterverse, basically, cheat on Tessa, that doesn't make him not married to her. I don't think that's what he's doing, but for me, it's not something that can send me into a tizzy over thinking he's not with Tessa, he is. Worst case, he's decided to use her birthday weekend to make a drunken ass of himself and cheat on her (although those who say he was hooking up are just so discombobulated by this they immediately worse case it - like ripping the bandaid off. They can't stand the unstable feeling so they just go what is, to them, apocalyptic). I don't think he's doing that either.

I think this is the same damn thing it's always been. I know, what are the odds that this is the SAME damn thing it's always been? Apparently there's a lot of people who think the odds are slim. Go figure.

They're just living their lives and, amazingly, on her birthday weekend, tons of people see Scott? Photos of Scott acting like a tool go up on instagram? It's a coincidence? There's pregnancy speculation about Tessa, it's her birthday, suddenly this, and fans start rending their garments?

Keep it up. Because this is what they (Moirville) think of you. They enjoy producing this reaction.

I have wondered about the retirement situation. I've expressed my belief that they don't want to retire, and are sitting out this season with the intention of reappearing next season and possibly pushing on to the next Olympics, if they get the idea it won't be futile, as it was this past season.

But there's the other way to look at it, and that's the role the sham plays in the petty power tripping among the no-lifers in his home town community. They can't let go and move on. This is what they've got. If Scott and Tessa officially retire, the rationale for the sham because a whole lot more strained. I'm sure they could FIND one, but it's easier to justify as eligible skaters, and then the party doesn't have to stop for Moirville.

But again, I wish people would get a clue. They have been down this road a thousand times. Virtue and Moir googly eyed and all over each other, hinting at what could possibly occur down the line. Then BAM! usually from Scott. And the same people, I suspect, are the ones having meltdowns all over the internet. These people, who don't know for themselves or first hand, still believe that the people who sham as recreation are going to deliver off-ice 'proof' that they're together and it's going to make its way to the public domain on the web. They think that all of this conspicuous acting out - twitter, instagram, facebook - is some big coincidence shattering their hopes.

No. It's a pattern. If you let them put yourselves through this, it's on you. They clearly get off on it.

    2. I was JUST coming here to type pretty much something similar. I have been hashing this out in my brain. The acting out is true to form. IF THE BLOG IS TRUE this is EXACTLY how they would act. They are all over each other and people are noticing--pregnancy rumors---we need to protect our lies/lives-----let's hit them with something.

I also found it more than a little bit interesting how quickly the Kaitlyn Lawes thing got shut down. I suspect that it had a little bit to do with this blog calling them out right away.

It's SO FREAKING OBVIOUS THAT HE IS MADLY IN LOVE WITH TESSA VIRTUE for crying out loud! And it's not new--it's a lifetime of video freaking footage---THAT CANNOT BE FAKED! And OC is right -the video/picture evidence is out there of a pregnancy/child...go freaking find it--she mentions them in this blog. ...even if there was no child they are in a relationship based on even the most recent footage at the Olympic gala practice where she is standing behind Scott and he pulls her arms around him. It's irritating that people can't see that they are freaking lying about their relationship--yet they KNOW they are liars because that documentary is FULL OF LIES and even the shippiest shipper can see that!!!!

see this is the problem with this perceived vast conspiracy of yours. literally no one except a small handful of people give a shit about them. certainly not enough to actively go digging through the bowels of social media for even the slightest mention of them.

    5. I wonder if Kaitlyn Lawes had second thoughts about being part of the discussion grist around the sham, although we don't know for sure it's "shut down". You don't have that UWO lady get all coy on twitter about Scott and Kaitlyn if you're trying to come in on little cat feet. I love when grown ups act like she did. It's pathetic.

I don't think they need to "protect themselves." They get OFF on it. They get off on walking right up to the line as far as how all over each other they are in public, and what they say, and then, just set your clocks - BOOM.

And here we go. A husband wouldn't act that way! A daddy wouldn't act that way! A father-to-be wouldn't act that way.

That's why they do it. Moreover, all of this agitation is used as proof of how "intensely invested" fans are, even though they go quite a long way - and this past weekend once again demonstrates it - to GET fans worked up. This is what cage rattling looks like.

Of course the photos as far as girls are not incriminating. But it seems to me that there's a set of fans who have an ulcer because they don't know, nobody's sharing how THEY know, and they can't handle what to them feels like ambiguity/tension/stress, so they try to murder their hopes, and Scott and Tessa give them all the ammunition they need.

Until next time, when Scott and Tessa are all over each other again. No wonder they don't try anything new. This seems to give them all the reaction they need. I don't think all that many people are into it, or reacting, frankly. But enough to make noise. They want the attention, they want the feedback, and it doesn't take much to give it to them.

      Delete
    6. And btw, while overcompensating and rattling cages are an excuse to a point, nothing excuses Scott permitting himself to behave the way he did at the hockey game. Or to behave the way he reportedly did at Winks (basically, drunk and acting weird), enough so as to get kicked out.

But look at HIS mindset. Not long ago, he said he used to be interested in law enforcement, until he was arrested. Now he's disillusioned with law enforcement. That's right. Re-think law enforcement. Not your own behavior. That's some kind of bubble they live in.

7:37, I don't have a vast conspiracy, I have a set of facts. Which are, that Scott and Tessa are married and have a daughter. Everything they do and say in public are therefore looked at with those facts in mind.

Stop acting out on the blog, btw. Every time you ocd post here, you are belying all your own assertions about whether fans care or not. Prove your own point, instead of undermining it.

I haven't gone to the stat counter to see where it's coming from, because last time I had a compulsive person in the comments section, I blocked the ISP, then forgot to unblock after things calmed down. I don't want to do it again but will.

    9. There's an obvious irony in some people compulsively visiting the blog and posting in the comments section with the claim that nobody, or at least, a very few fans, are interested in what Scott and Tessa do, enough to seek out what they put on social media. And yet these visitors to the comments section are themselves compulsive about checking out the blog, and compulsive about finding what Scott and Tessa do on social media. Do these people think they're unique? They're fans. Fans act the same way. It's never the majority of the public, but an intense component of the public, and the most conspicuous. It's not unique to Scott and Tessa. Scott/Tessa keep pitching it as unique, but it isn't. To deny that component exists, when you yourself act like the person you deny exists, is a little ridiculous. You're not unique either.

Since Scott and Tessa reached the public eye, there have been fans chasing down whatever they put on social media, and sharing it privately. It's not something that can't be managed professionally, but that's not the route they've chosen. They've decided to manipulate it and exploit it and use it as a "unique" component of their branding, when it's not unique in the least.

    11. I am not convinced you are not hired by the families, oycanada. A while back an active V/M fan fb page went private after being talked about here, and now a bunch of the tumblr girls have changed their sites to be private as of today. You're helping limit the forums where these obsessive fans congregate, which might be exactly what Tessa and Scott want.

After months of events like a women's lifestyle convention and meet-and-greets with old ladies and teenage girls who spend creepy amounts of time analyzing his every move, Scott spends a few days "acting up" and now these "fans" - who were publicly considered him the gentleman of the century- are no longer disillusioned. Next time he's in a bar and someone snaps a picture, maybe there won't be 50 tumblr pages that it spread across ...maybe portraying yourself as an asshole from time to time has its perks.

Morally sound? Not so much...but a step towards post-olympic privacy from creepy fans that know nothing about skating but analyze EVERY move you make in terms of your "perfect" relationship? Maybe?

      Delete
    12. 5:37, your premise is flawed. Leading up to Sochi and beyond, the majority of VM fans were fixated on the skating, not on their personal lives.

It is VM's premise, not the blog's premise, that fans are obsessed with their personal lives. They cultivate that idea.

If you scroll back through the blog, you will see that the blog's premise, which I believe has substantial support, is that the sham exists as much to placate, occupy, pander, buffer against the encroachments of their nearest and dearest as it does the fans. In fact, much more so. Whatever you think of fans scrutinizing and analyzing the moves they make, their community does it 1,000 fold. They have more to chew on than we do, and chew on it they do.

Furthermore, Scott and Tessa give OUT stuff for us to analyze. Please do not put it on the blog, or on the fans, that it's US who analyzes every move they make, after they, on their own, decided to produce and air that fan fic epic "Tessa and Scott." where they analyzed themselves, played into every fan theory out there, and did everything they could to encourage fans to continue. They WANT the fans analyzing and talking. Fans want to talk about skating. Give them half a chance, that's all fans would talk about, and they'd take the relationship side for granted.

Unfortunately, that doesn't do a thing for Moirville, which IS up Scott and Tessa's ass. Their skating, yes, but also their relationship. We're the scapegoats for that. Scott and Tessa aren't going to tell Moirville, and Moirville is going to pretend til their dying day that we're the problem, not them, and VM enable that. Every other Olympic athlete with even a suggestion of maturity sooner or later addresses the real problem. Virtue and Moir are chicken shit. They prefer scapegoats.

YOU are wrong. The fans are not obsessed with Virtue and Moir's moves. Virtue and Moir reach out and try to bait the fans into being so, but it's had diminishing returns. However, nothing has satiated their community.

They do not WANT us to not be interested. We're their scapegoat.

  18. Figure skating fans are cute. They get shocked and offended by pretty much everything. The Scott Moir tag on Tumblr is hilarious these days. They act like Scott committed first degree murder.
He got wasted and acted like an idiot. Shocker. The majority of young men ( and women ) do this at least once in their lifetime. It's part of growing up. And despite being 26 Scott still has lots of growing up to do. He still hasn't emancipated himself from his family and spent the majority of his youth being extremely disciplined. It's only natural for him to do things now that most kids do during their college days.
Most skaters are pampered prima donnas with strict parents and even stricter schedules who don't spend much time in the real world and fans seem to be just as detached from reality as skating families.
Skating fans are already throwing hissy fits whenever a skater just dares to voice an opinion so having a young man behaving like a young man is kinda shocking to them.

This sport can not progress as long as it has such fans. The ISU can do whatever it wants because the general public doesn't care and the few fans can not be taken seriously.

    2. What confuses me are the people who say things like "we can't know if Virtue and Moir are together, but we do know Scott is this way and Tessa is that way and it might mean they would do this or that."

Where do these people get off saying they can't know if two ice dancers they're fans of are dating/married but they CAN know how they will probably react/speak in any given situation? That's ridiculous. They don't know shit about how Virtue and Moir would react or what they would say in any situation related to their personal lives because those fans are not, nor have they ever been, privy to what Virtue and Moir are like off-camera and out of the public eye. They are basing all of their pyschoanalysis bullshit on the public images Virtue and Moir have crafted for themselves.

Here's what's true and a shit ton of people know to be true. Virtue and Moir are married with a child. It's not a state secret. People know it's true for reasons that have nothing to do with analyzing Virtue and Moir's body language or uncovering code words in their speech.

The fan-celebrity relationship and how it's cultivated/sustained is what this blog has always looked at and broken down. It doesn't need to break down Virtue and Moir's relationship, nor does it. There's nothing to break down. They're married with a kid. Beyond that: who they actually are as people outside of the public eye (which is the only place the public ever sees and interacts with them, and that includes social media) - how they would react to things or say in certain situations behind closed doors - that should stay (and does stay) behind those closed doors.

  19. Just to add my two cents...unfortunately due to the decline of figure skating's popularity - over the last decade or so - there are less professional skating shows worldwide and obviously less opportunity for a post-amateur skater. Kurt Browning, Sale/Pelletier, Stojko are a few Canadians who made very good coin after their amateur career was over and basically are financially stable for the rest of their lives. The same skating opportunities are not there for Virtue/Moir. And in North America - there is no chance of them getting to skate in US shows since DW and IMG get first dibs.
Also you have to be realistic and see that it pays to have connections in the real world/entertainment industry. Meryl Davis is getting so much political backing with DTWS - you would think that she would be a candidate for the next presidential campaign in 2016...Charlie White has nothing to worry about since he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth...Tessa Virtue will be fine - the Virtues I'm guessing are well connected and Kate Virtue will ensure that Tessa gets every opportunity for a post skating career whether in media or whatever...Scott will probably have the hardest time in redefining himself...and that's fine...and it will take time for him to find his niche....look at Jeff Buttle and even Brian Orser...it took a while for these guys to find their niche...and if Scott wants to pursue something that it is not in the public eye or more of a trade job - more power to him...I think Scott has a great amount of potential and has already achieved in life.
It appears that Tessa, Kurt and his wife Sonia Rodrigues (and others) will be attending a gala tonight in Toronto for Hello Canada and their 50 most beautiful people blah blah blah...I don't expect Scott to be in attendance...which is fine...

    1. Scott Moir is 26 years old. He's married and a father. Married fathers go out and drink with their buddies. Sometimes they get rip roaring drunk and do stupid things.

Scott Moir is also a public figure, Olympic gold and silver medalist, and the holder of certain product endorsements. It doesn't matter WHY he did what he did. What matters is it showed up on social media. It doesn't matter if he was actually coked out of his mind at a club or that isn't true. Someone on social media claimed he was true and it quickly spread around.

Scott Moir isn't just some regular guy. He may want to be seen that way, and he might feel he is, but he has a celebrity profile and that changes things. It ups the ante as well as expectations. He isn't the only person who makes money off of his skating. So do his sponsors, and the sponsors of the shows he participates in, etc.

If he wants to go out and get piss drunk, he has that right. But he also has the right to know that what ends up on social media matters. What's more, he WANTS certain things out on social media to sell the lie he and Tessa Virtue are not married or have a child. So he's fucking himself on both ends.

    2. I don't think we'll see much of Meryl once she retires for good. No bribery can make up for her off putting personality and that annoying voice. I can't imagine anybody would want to hire her for a job in the spotlight. She's not going to become the next Jennifer Lawrence and can consider herself happy to have wealthy family.
Charlie is too homely and too much of a good boy to become famous. He seems to be quite happy living a normal life with Tanith. Though I believe Tanith wants more than that. Who knows how long she'll stay with him once he doesn't provide media attention for her.
Tessa could become a media personality if she wanted to but I don't think she'd want that.
And Scott really seems to prefer a normal life aside from skating in shows. He might become a coach one day, I'm sure he'd be great in that field.

    7. Sorry, I was responding to 6:57.

    8. @7:26, the difference is, people weren't just saying "anything" on social media. Their statements were accompanied by numerous photographs of Scott Moir shitfaced.

If celebrity/public figures (and yes, they're one in the same) want to protect themselves against "false reports," they can't go around posing for photos while they're so fucking wasted they can barely stand up straight. Scott Moir is a celebrity. As long as he remains in the public eye as a competitive or professional skater, he can't/won't be just some normal guy living a normal life. His skating career makes him money via sponsorships, professional associations, etc. The trade off is that he'll be held to a higher standard during that time. That's reality. If he doesn't like it, he can quit skating altogether. Furthermore, he fucks himself because his own social media bullshit campaign is designed to convince people he's not married to Tessa Virtue, so people are encouraged to tweet about seeing him out on his own. The photos they usually take and post are of him completely smashed. Those aren't photoshopped. That's him choosing to act that way.

There are people out there who can craft and handle a celebrity's public image with professionalism and competency. They may be making money, but nothing about Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's public image indicates it's being handled professionally or competently. That ups the possibility things could blow up in their faces no matter how invincible they believe themselves to be.

    9. I'm 7:26. I was referring to the coke allegation. The only thing we've got to support that is one person's statement. The person might be right, might be mistaken, might have knowingly said something false. We don't know. I could spot a celebrity at a bar and then claim all kinds of things happened. Generally, unless there are pictures or multiple reports, it has to be taken with a grain of salt.

I agree with the rest, I think team VM actually wants pictures of drunk Scott out there to further their platonic narrative. I suspect they're a lot more concerned with rumours about a relationship and pregnancy than any potential PR damage from Scott's drunken behaviour. Their priorities are truly messed up.

    10. What a fantastic rebuttal, 8:24.

It cracks me up when people come over here and make posts full of cursing, yelling, or name-calling to try and shut down discussion rather than provide anything of substance. It never works, but it's still amusing.

Keep throwing your little tantrums if you like, 8:24. It won't change the fact Virtue and Moir are married with a kid no matter how many times you claim it isn't true.

      Delete
    11. @8:56, there ARE pictures with multiple reports, though. Reports that Moir was totally wasted. Whether it was due to alcohol or drugs can't be determined from the photos, but that's the larger point.

"Generally, unless there are pictures or multiple reports, it has to be taken with a grain of salt."

That's a good way to look at the situation regarding a non-celebrity, but Scott Moir isn't a non-celebrity. The standards are higher for him, he has a specific image that is tied to several organizations and associations. It doesn't really matter if Moir was just drunk or if he was also high. What matters is that he's a public figure with images of him shitfaced hitting social media being attached to at least one report he was coked out of his fucking mind. That's all it can take to lose control of one's own public narrative.

      Delete
    12. I think you're overreacting a bit. There are athletes who've had way more than one mention of drug use on the Internet and it's never hit the mainstream and hasn't hurt their sponsorship opportunities. It's not a good thing for his image but it isn't the end of the world either.

      Delete
    13. It's not an overreaction. It's a commentary on why the rules for these things are different for celebrities than they are for normal people.

      Delete
    14. You're saying that this one report is enough for him to lose control of his public narrative and I can't think of a single celebrity where this has happened. His image in the figure skating gossip community, sure, but that's not the same thing.

      Delete
    15. No one is saying it's the end of the world. Just that Mr. Moir *is* held to a different standard, like it or not.

It's a copout to keep trying to excuse him because he's a guy, he's Canadian, it's hockey, he's not responsible for other people's children (sorry...kids look up to him. That makes him responsible, like it or not), he's letting off steam, yadda yadda yadda. Bulshit.

Mr. Moir does not get a pass for his trashy public behaviour. He acted like a classless idiot, uncaring of all the children and youth who consider him a role model.

      Delete
    16. @10:03, it IS enough. Doesn't mean it will in this instance, but yes, something as little as one report can balloon outward and cause someone to lose control of their narrative. The point isn't that I think it will, but that because the rules are different for celebrities, it CAN in these kinds of situations.

The figure skating gossipmongers do not exist independently of the larger figure skating community. They work to help drive its narratives, which have sustained impacts on skaters/teams/federations/shows/etc.

      Delete
    17. I'm not excusing him at all and I've even said the exact same thing about public figures being held to a higher standard in a previous comment. It's just that you got a little carried away and seriously overstated the consequences of all this. Journalists don't report on this kind of thing unless they're confronted with proof and don't have a choice, just look at how they've handled VM's relationship.

I'm disappointed in Scott as well but then I've been disappointed in both Scott and Tessa so many times that at this point this latest incident is just one more in a long list of them. They haven't shown themselves to be particularly good people.

      Delete
    18. @10:41, I'm not sure why you think my providing commentary on how situations that might seem innocuous or inconsequential can quickly balloon out and impact celebrities has anything to do with getting carried away.

The key thing to do in these instances is never to assume you know how anyone will react in a given situation, whether it be the press, someone's sponsors, or the fans. The key thing is to make sure you keep yourself or that celebrity out of situations where any of those three groups might have a negative reaction (whatever that reaction may be).

That's what I meant about the sense of invincibility. The "no one is going to out us because we're protected by this or that" mentality. The minute someone falls back on that is the minute they begin to make themselves vulnerable. It seems to be what Virtue and Moir always fall back on. A professional or competent representative would not operate under those kinds of assumptions. They would set themselves up as the first defense by making sure their clients understand the rules are different for them (it doesn't matter if their clients think that's fair or not, it's just how it is) and how best to avoid putting themselves into situations that could put them in danger of losing control over their narrative.

    19. "The figure skating gossipmongers do not exist independently of the larger figure skating community. They work to help drive its narratives, which have sustained impacts on skaters/teams/federations/shows/etc."

The figure skating gossip community has nothing to do with public narratives. Remember all the rumours about Tessa and David Pelletier? Never mentioned except when Tessa wanted to address it. And seeing as they won the Olympics, the homewrecker label doesn't appear to have hurt them in the figure skating community.

I'm not sure how this situation is hugely different. If these pictures and reports had come out a week before Sochi then yes, it might have an impact since people could question Scott's commitment to training. In the off-season, and when they're likely retired, not so much. Skaters of VM's calibre will be invited to shows no matter what.

      Delete
    20. "Remember all the rumours about Tessa and David Pelletier? Never mentioned except when Tessa wanted to address it."

If the rumors didn't matter or wouldn't have had any negative impact on their public narrative, why do you think Tessa Virtue addressed them? You think she thought that mentioning to a national entertainment news program she wasn't fucking David Pelletier and didn't ruin his marriage was something she thought would be a fun, cool addition to her storyline? No. It was addressed for a specific reason. To kill the rumors. You don't have to kill a rumor unless you think it's going to hurt you.

      Delete
    21. Thank you for bringing up the Pelletier rumor and public denial, actually. It gets the root of what I've been arguing.

The Tessa Virtue/David Pelletier rumors originated in the figure skating gossip community. There would have been no reason for those rumors to be negated by Virtue and Moir on the record unless there was a concern those rumors might negatively impact Tessa Virtue's public narrative.

      Delete
    22. "I'm not sure why you think my providing commentary on how situations that might seem innocuous or inconsequential can quickly balloon out and impact celebrities has anything to do with getting carried away."

Because that isn't what you said originally. You said this specific incident would impact Scott's public narrative and that's simply not true. There was a hockey player in my hometown who was addicted to coke. It was public knowledge in the city and mentioned in lots of places on the Internet. Meanwhile, no journalist wanted to touch it and instead they continued to report on all his good work for local charities and what a good guy he was. It's the same situation with all celebrities, journalists aren't going to risk losing access or getting sued for libel. If you can find any example where journalists behaved differently, I'd love to see it.

Of course a sense of invincibility is dangerous because you never know when someone will come out with a picture, a video or other evidence and then it's open season for the media. I suspect this could happen with the sham if they don't stop it soon.

I'll address your point about the DP rumours tomorrow since I really need to go to bed and it could take a while.

    23. Nope, I never said it WOULD impact Scott Moir's public narrative, only that it COULD because he's a celebrity and that he puts himself at a greater risk of losing control of that narrative because of the way he operates on social media, encouraging or setting up people to tweet photos of him out and about (when he's usually shitfaced drunk) in an effort to convince the public he's not married to Tessa.

Please show me in my previous posts where I said this specific incident would for sure impact Scott's public narrative. I'll help you out. My posts in this conversation are: 6:57, 8:22, 9:10, 9:55, 10:26, 10:49, 11:17, and 11:30.

Meanwhile, no journalist wanted to touch it...Of course a sense of invincibility is dangerous because you never know when someone will come out with a picture, a video or other evidence and then it's open season for the media."

Were there photos of said hockey player floating around the internet where he was smashed out of his gourd? There are photos of Scott Moir floating around of that very thing. They don't prove he was on a coke bender, but they don't disprove it either. They do show he was wasted. What he was wasted on doesn't really matter. If someone says it was coke, even if it wasn't, that story can get spread around and people can toss out the photos as "evidence." Then it has the potential to balloon outward from there. That has been my point this entire time.

The problem with the hockey player example you mentioned is that it doesn't prove journalists wouldn't eventually pick up on any Scott Moir rumors and address them. I'm not saying they WILL, but the possibility cannot be eliminated either. The reason I say that is because the same reasoning you listed could have applied to the David Pelletier/Tessa Virtue rumors, correct? They, like the Scott Moir bender rumors, originated on and spread via social media/internal gossip networks. They had never been mentioned on the record, ever. Then suddenly they were, in an interview piece about Virtue and Moir. They were brought up and shot down.

If no journalist cared to follow that story because they were afraid of losing access or being sued for libel, or because they believed the rumors had no business being mentioned in an on the record entertainment news show, why were they addressed? It was either because Virtue and Moir wanted them addressed in order to deny them (thus proving social media rumors, even baseless, have the potential to injure one's narrative), or because some journalist found them and decided they were worth mentioning in the segment. That pretty much beats down the argument that journalists only report on things they have proof of or they don't care about rumors that originate on social media networks. They'll care if they get big enough. I don't think the Scott Moir bender rumor is that big, but I think it should also be noted that initially, the Pelletier/Virtue rumor wasn't either. It grew, and any other rumor has the potential to do so as well.

My suggestion to Scott Moir would be to stop trying to convince the public he's not married to Tessa Virtue because:

      1. He's bad at it.
      2. It usually results in photos of him shitfaced drunk appearing online.
      3. Together with rumors he acts like a tool when drunk, gets kicked out of bars, and might have been high on drugs, those photos aren't doing him any favors and have the potential to get him in trouble if he's not careful.

    25. 12:40 - I'm the person who was arguing with you earlier.

I started responding to you because, by the tone of your posts, you seemed incredibly angry about what Scott was doing to his image and I didn’t think it was quite that bad. I was also solely talking about the drug allegation, which is the most serious one, along with the obnoxious behaviour. Being incredibly drunk, in itself, is not that serious, but I guess you disagree. It’s not the first time a picture of a very drunk athlete has popped up, that’s for sure.

Of course, most drunk celebrities don’t pose for a ton of pictures, knowing full well they’ll end up on social media. Scott and company clearly want the pictures out there for sham purposes and the fake girlfriend has been replaced by a boozing image and lots of pictures with women, surely meant to suggest that he’s playing the field. That’s not a flattering image for Scott and I’m sure it has disappointed many fans. I think you’re also arguing that it’s opened the door to making the coke allegation more believable, and I can agree with that. My point is that the only thing the pictures show is that he’s wasted. There’s no proof of drug use and, like it or not, getting really drunk is more or less socially accepted for young men. The allegations are just that, allegations. Even if they turn into persistent rumours on the Internet, they’re not going to make it into the mainstream media, especially not Canadian mainstream media and especially not between Olympics when VM’s profile is very low. That’s what I mean when I say they won’t hurt his public narrative. Now, does this mean they won’t hurt him at all? No, it will impact his reputation among Internet fans who might decide to stop following VM. The thing is, I don’t think they care, certainly their behaviour so far has never showed that they cared.

The Etalk piece where the DP rumours were mention is interesting in that the rumours were never denied. The net effect was bringing the rumours to the attention of lots of people who’d never heard of them and confirming the opinion of people who were already convinced they were true. I think Tessa actually wanted the rumour out there because it helped push the sham. Why else did she not take pictures with some fake boyfriend to try to quell the rumours? There were pictures before and after, but during the height of speculation, no pictures at all. And pictures would have been much more effective in dealing with the rumours than any kind of maybe public denial. Basically, I don’t think this is an example of VM denying a harmful rumour, not at all. And Etalk is a celebrity promotion service, nothing more. If the rumours were addressed, it's because VM wanted them addressed. Why? Who knows, it's impossible to understand what goes on in their brains. What appears clear to me is that VM don't care about their reputations, they care about the sham above all else. And in Canada, one of the most conservative countries when it comes to disclosure (check out Canadian libel laws if you have the chance), rumours aren't going to make it to legit media unless they want them to.

      Delete
    26. Well, some of this discussion positions VM and the media opposite each other instead of where they actually are, which is in bed with each other. Members of the media, particularly the celebrity media, entertainment media, identify with and socialize with celebrities and are often celebrities of a stripe themselves. Their job is 99% p.r. Scott running around wasted isn't going to come to the attention of anybody in journalism who'd find it newsworthy. It's only newsworthy to VM fans who are on the fence about whether or not he's with Tessa. Any time he's on his own, shitfaced or sober, those fans see it as evidence they're not together. We need some type of threat graph, the way security threat levels used to be rated. White is Scott and Tessa are making appearances together, being cute, and being affectionate. Code pink is Tessa in Toronto without Scott. Code Red is Scott rampaging through London or Ildterton without Tessa. Code Purple is Scott outside of Canada with a sham girlfriend. Code black is Code Purple plus birthday, significant family event, or holiday.

    3. They clearly haven't seen each other since her trip to Ilderton, both were buzy and far away from each other, proof is everywhere as they're public figures. Who would actually believe this love story now?

    4. 3:36--I would feel non-cynical too if it weren't for the report of Scott and K.Lawes out to dinner with his parents. Come on, why should a "business trip" need to include a foursome out on the town with only his parents? Business with VM should have included at least also Tessa, plus a few other people.

I think it looks very much like they were test-driving a new sham GF. They went to a lot of trouble setting it up, with tweets of Moir and Lawes seen together and Scott taking her to an Ilderton event, just like a date. It was never set up as if it were merely VM business.

It appears as if something made them decide not to follow through. Whether Lawes or someone else, I think it's guaranteed Scott will soon have a new sham GF. Moirville doesn't think VM can function as a public entity without a sham. Just watch....

      Delete
    5. There's no reason why Lawes would be out of the frame yet - the trip to Ilderton and the golf tournament (if she rocks up) could be the set up. It makes way more sense to introduce her as the new gf now than straight after Sochi when Cassandra was still in the picture. They meet at the Olympics, Scott was on the outs of a relationship, Kaitlyn plays golf, he invited her to Ilderton to talk about the charity tournament, they kept in touch while he was on tour and by the time the tournament rolls round, sparks have flown and there's your new sham gf.

I get what she was trying to do with that dress, but I think it came up short because the dress is too small right now. It was ill-fitting and the fabric was pulling in places. The effect, IMO, was that it made it more obvious to those who aren't being willfully blind.
