Tessa

Scott remains brilliant, but it's hard to remember back in the day when some fans thought he was the genius and she was the technician. He's wonderful, and I try very hard to watch him and just him in this free dance, but I keep going to her. The layers of detail in what she's doing, and HOW she's doing it, are breathtaking. He has gorgeous run of blade, his shoulders are more relaxed than they've ever been, but it's Tessa who is framing these programs. She has the in the bone understanding and he is her foil - in performance, not in skating. Performance includes not just the acting, but the intention behind every isolation, every beat, every transition.

Direction changes, hold changes. Not
advertising it. How many fans even notice?
And the blade run, the speed.

They switch sides during the twizzles. I don't think people notice 1/4 of what VM do, because they refuse to advertise - meaning, refuse to cue the audience. Heads up, this is hard. And what they do actually is difficult, compared to other teams who look for something "effective" that is actually made easier by the required feature.

This what Latin dance looks like.

y.

One fan on a skate board claimed they lost the latin character
here.

  1. Ya, those twizzles are high risk, and that cross over is done in ina bauer position, not to mention the other transition between the 2nd and 3rd set and then the 3rd set ending a the beat of the music.

  2. Yay! I'm glad you're back OC to educate us ignorant peeps (well, me) who can recognize they've got mad skills but can't articulate why or even understand why -bravo

    1. You should do videos with voice over pointing out these details on both the good and bad teams.

    2. It's frustrating, because, unlike most skaters in every discipline, they refuse to telegraph difficulty. Lesser teams like Davis White telegraphed faux difficulty - elements that were actually simplified.

  3. I'm worried that this stunning MR program is going to be underscored just like Carmen was. I just can't watch another Olympic gold robbed from them again.

    1. I don't think they would have returned if that were a possibility. It's obvious that understandings were reached prior to them declaring for these Olympics. If P/C were going to railroaded like D/W were, VM would never have come back. What I see is last season they poor-mouthed themselves, compared the softness of their stroking unfavorably to the French, praised Gadbois to the skies, and were just happy to be in the mix. It was also completely notable that nothing they skated last year was beyond the technical reach of any other team - their execution was, but the content was not. This season, whether the content is appropriately valued or not (it's not) their much greater difficulty has returned, choreographically, including moves that were discouraged or they were told to remove in previous cycles. The "twist lift" they used at the end of 2010's Farrucus is back here in both the short and long. It's used as a very soft accent in the free - it's not presented as a highlight, but as a transition, but that's all presentation. The move itself is the same damn move - done even better. There's also something that looks slightly like a pairs throw, but I think Tessa is careful not to get air as she leave Scott's arms (I'll have to slo mo it). More importantly the choreography is more intricate than last year's program, there are more direction changes while in hold and changes of hold, there are a million moments where they briefly separate and re-connect where the re-connection is blind.

One of the biggest differences between Virtue and Moir and P/C, and previously between Virtue and Moir and D/W, is the rival team could not SKATE transitions. There's always one partner moving and the other not, one partner being pulled or lifted to effect the change of direction, one partner taking a knee, or going on two feet. Always. It kills me.

Anyway, bottom line, don't think they'll be robbed. They have to know 2014 the fix was in, and there would be no point to coming back and being sacrificial lambs for a ridiculous team like P/C.

    2. Completely agree and the proof so to speak is in the pudding. Seasons had the carmen lift - the insane entry at least - and after finlandia they removed it. This fd and sd is such that the story will be who will come in 2nd? The Americans or the French.

    3. I actually meant to say that the lesser teams can't change direction with their skating. It's a lift, a yank, two feet, a push - something. Other teams besides VM can use their skating to effect a directional change, but the ones billed as neck and neck with VM have been frauds.

  4. Hello, Carmen 2.0! This program is insane! The beginning... oh my! There's a 99.9% chance I'd die if I tried it. What really bothers me have already been mentioned: They make it look so easy that when people see it they think other teams have better programs. Teams that could be outskated by junior VM. Let's hope the judges will be honest this time and give them their gold. VM are so above the others it's a bit sad watching the other teams. Their bodies, everything... It's so different. Tessa is always tight. Even when she's flying. Other skaters look like rag dolls! And Scott... just throwing a woman around like it's nothing. No big deal. Nothing to see here. Move along.
There's only one thing I don't like: The music. Words cannot express how much I HATE the music! The first part is ok but then it's downhill. Oh well. I'll probably be singing happily along by the time the olympics start so it's ok.

    1. I think the music works, and I'm not a big fan of Moulin Rouge. I'm also a big fan of the final sequence where she "dies". There are fans who think they should club the audience over the head and use the full ending of Come What May. I think that's absurd. Thematically, there's struggle and jealousy in the beginning, and then just as it's rising to joy, so to speak, she starts to die. I think in terms of construction, having them hit a joyous moment and then an equally large tragic moment lacks contrast. That's just my armchair performance evaluation, not a skating thing, although I love how Tessa dies.

I think there's scarcely a moment in Tessa's skate where she's not on a clear edge, no matter how inconsequential the moment in the choreography.

Back to the short - there's a gaggle of intense posters on the forums insisting the short isn't latin. To quote Jacquelyn Thayer, whose twitter I'm adding to this post, "If they can skate a sd with samba rolls, promendades and rumba hips, Virtue/Moir can wear as much OTT dansport bling as their hearts desire."

The sd is a party. The costumes are part of it. They're show costumes, annual parade costumes, let's go all in attire. The sd is fun. It's not a tragic tango. What it is is Latin dance as hell, that they're SKATING. The discussion around this sd is, to me, the usual one part carping from fans who want VM to be their own personal avatars and skate an extension of their own fantasies, two, fans of other skaters slicing them down - incompetently so, but that's the agenda, and three, people who don't understand that dance is about proscribed rhythms and movement. The music in the sd has the appropriate rhythms - it doesn't matter if the genre is so-called soft rock, although both the so-called soft rock pieces use Latin rhythms. There are also layers of rhythm in each piece, and Virtue and Moir are mostly playing off, working with and in counterpoint to the percussion. Stylistically, it may be in your face, although I think that is mitigated by the perfect cut and fit of the costumes they're wearing. Look past the color and embellishments. And in your face or not, the choreography and the skating is sophisticated as hell.

    2. Oh, Tessa dies so well! I love it! And the "twist lift" actually looks harder than when it was performed in the Farrucas. I'm not a skater so it's only my opinion. The costumes are awesome! I've seen some people saying bad things about it but I guess it's a matter of taste. I actually hate the "typical" skating costumes. God forbid they use anything like the costumes they had for "What's Love Got To Do With It". I just with they'd change Scott's FD top. It made him look chumky. Something I thought was impossible because he's got such incredible body. People always seem to pick on Scott's clothes but I love them. The dark, elegant style in Carmen. Also loved the prince charming thing. Hope it doesn't change.

    3. I like Scott's costume. He always bulks up in the summer, so his chest and neck are bigger than they tend to be at the end of the season. I just get a tremendous kick out of Virtue and Moir's sd costumes, although no doubt an abstract version exists (as there were abstract versions of the Carmen costumes) that they'll unveil at some point.

Not a fan of What's Love Got to Do With It costumes either. I am just never convinced by Scott in a wife beater. Not sure why.

      Delete
    4. I love the Carmen costumes! And another one I like is the much hated peacock dress. I don't think I've ever seen so many people dislike a dress! Well, I guess I'm a strange girl.
Oh, you remembered the wife beater! *shudders* It's just awful! I can't quite put my finger on it. It's just wrong. But I was referfing to a black and white monstrosity they wore later on the shows.
Yes, Scott always seem to bulk up in the summer but always looks good. I think it's the colour and print I don't like. And even though I love the longer hair it's getting a bit much now. Someone should give this boy a haircut!

      Delete
    5. The longer hair, to me, is pretty much the most contrived thing about their look. The only contrived thing. Scott's not a fling his long hair about dude.

      Delete
    6. I actually liked it at the beginning of last season. Just a little bit longer. Now it lost it's form.

I guess they had to try and keep at least one thing to make them relatable to the other ice dancers since they got rid of the bullshit this season. I can almost hear the other teams whining: "Wasn't it enough they decided to come back and steal any chance we had at the olympics? Do they have to be so different? They don't do the things we do! Ooh, Scott's got long hair, it's ok now!"

    7. I wanted to add something which is to comment on the speculation that the Moulin Rouge ending is too quiet /subdued. What did I miss? Am I forgetting that the Mahler program concluded with a drum roll and a clash of symbols or what?

    8. Scott's hair somewhat works for the Latin SD. They sold me on that program. MR has beautiful bones. If they work on the Roxanne (the part where the fast-paced violins "Roxanne" part before Come What May), I'd like to see if they'd skate separately (criss crossing and meeting each other). Like their Umbrellas program where they dance separately but fast then meet. Each with interesting movement ...

    9. There is a notorious P/C diehard who posted after V/M's debut at ACI that "less is more" when it comes to ice dance programs. It is such a ridiculous statement and a reflection of a notion that has taken hold this quad that skating a program with less content is more difficult than skating a program with more content.

I think at least some of the people who said they were overwhelmed by V/M's SD were overwhelmed because the program has actual difficult content from start to finish.

      Delete
    10. Skating a program with massive run of blade is better than a lot of short, choppy strokes but other wise I bet that uber couldn't even define less is more. They will certainly get to stand behind it now that P/C's Ed Sheeran sd choice has been unveiled. That's some tepid music. P/C are much much busier skaters than VM - defining busy as empty movement.

  5. This must be an Olympic season because the skating forums are reaching a feverish panic level and we're only in September! September, people! I love the posters who are already calling for the complete removal of the Come What May section. Really now?

OC, I can't wait to read about your thoughts when we finally see the debut of P/C's programs. If the rumours are correct and they are skating to Moonlight Sonata with choreography by Christoper Dean, I would love to see how P/C handle it. Dean's choreography tends to leave me in the cold but he also uses a lot of changes in edges and different dance holds.

    1. Just like 7:59am below I'm losing my mind reading predictions about P/C. The aggressive ignorance on parade is enough to make you retch. So far, I think my favorite remark is that P/C don't dance to the music, the music dances to them. Alrighty. Many are of the opinion that P/C deserve the win simply for choosing Moonlight Sonata over Moulin Rouge, and certainly they should take a hit on PCs for Ewan McGregor's singing.

There is a great deal of running down of Virtue and Moir's programs - programs and style, as ever, since the knowledge of skating content and of rhythm is zero, even when they try to bullshit their way through (such as Guillaume skates silently, without snow, and can change speeds without effort. No mention of his two-footing, the lack of unision, the lack of directional changes that are skated, the muddy footwork, the fact that Gabrielle hitches at the hips and bends into him when they're in hold or is it he's holding her up, etc. etc.) P/A are just hippies, that's it. Flower children. They're bohemian skaters who are chill out there even when they suck. I think what makes them stand out is the uber relaxation they project even when their skating is terrible. That IS innovative, stylistically. Janet Lynn (of yore - 1970s American ladies champion) also was very flower child when she skated, but she actually had technique. I think P/C's fans are all - look how effortless it is, how relaxed! Well yeah, they're not putting incredible effort into the actual skating part, nor accomplishing much in the skating area. But they get a boost by executing L4's that, if the moves were valued properly, would be L2s.

I'm ranting, but the remarks on the forums are just beyond. P/C have already won because they chose better music.

Thankfully the argument that VM didn't choose a latin theme (where was THEME in the requirements for this year?), nor latin music, died when it was repeatedly pointed out that rhythm is what matters, not the musical genre of the performers on the music track, and when it was also pointed out that P/C aren't skating to traditional latin either.

Somebody who is reporting from the celestial inner sanctum of Gadbois where P/C are training said that he learned V/M haven't been there in forever. What a surprise.

    2. P.S. - Dean. How many world champions and Olympic champions has Dean choreographed, besides himself and Jane Torvill? I recall his work for Crone Poirier and did he do something for Gilles Poirier? He doesn't adapt to the skater - he has a template and they fit themselves into it. If they can't do it, they skate in a squat and call it a day. He is, IMO, one note. But P/C fans, go ahead and dismiss David Wilson who has done programs for recent Olympic and world champions.

      Delete
    3. Crone/Poirier and Gilles/Poirier could only aspire to at most Canadian#2 team as long as V/M were around. P/C, on the other hand, are being trotted out as worthy rivals to V/M (because TPTB cannot allow a monopoly, it's bad for the sport that one team outskates everybody else). They also have their "artiste" schtick that dovetails so nicely with Dean's aesthetic. I'm curious if P/C will be able to stay true to his choreographic vision (Michelle Kwan certainly couldn't back in the day).

      Delete
    4. P/C's program will look like all their other programs; the only difference will be the costumes. Of course, dumbass fans and lapdog media will swoon that it is a gift from the ice dance gods. Puke.

      Delete
    5. @6:55 Dean only worked on the SD with P/C. They worked with Jeff Cirio of the American Ballet Theatre on Moonlight Sonata. They will perform their program at the French Masters this weekend. There is not normally video produced at this event but we may be able to see some fan-cam footage.

    6. I'm just interested in seeing how they wank the lack of rhythm in their sd. Or they'll pull a DW and let the music do the dancing for them while they skate in between poses.

Guillaume can certainly squat low - he seems to lack the edge control and core strength to achieve a conventional plié when he does a curve lift. He also weights one leg over the other - blatantly - and passes that off as a stylistic varation.

  6. It just goes to show the total ignorance of most so-called fans. I got a kick reading the comments on The Skating Lesson's Facebook posts; the ignorance is jaw-dropping (but I shouldn't be surprised). One poster was whining that V/M recycled lifts from previous programs, because why injure themselves trying new lifts. No dumbass, their lifts were difficult then, difficult now, and head and shoulders above anything anyone is currently attempting.

I would love to see P/C even attempt the curve lift in the free (and it was in last year's Prince SD), what with their wobbly-ass "edges".

The rhetoric this season is going to be insufferable.

  7. The recycled lift comments really tick me off when I think of all the actual PROGRAMS that are being recycled this year. And the lifts are not exact replicas. They are variations on previous lifts. Not even the lift from the Prince SD is exactly the same. And most teams repeat lifts.

  8. And how many years did D/W use the exact same twizzle sequence, the music was damned?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Whenever there's speculation about a DW comeback I can only picture them trying to pull off the little hop into a two set twizzle pass as L4. Good luck. They've got one way to twizzle, it's very 2008, it stayed L4 after 2010 because there was no other way they'd be able to have enough base value to win gold otherwise. That's it.

      Delete
  9. @ 1:39, exactly! Same twizzles in every program, with that clunky little hop into them that was a "feature". No choreo whatsoever where V/M choreographs their tw. There were 4 transitions in and around their Latch twizzles. And the MR twizzles are a major part of the program character wise and not just something they "get through".

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. I think earlier years in Tessa & Scott's, they repeat some. But as they grew stronger as skaters, they make those twizzles so unique for each of their SD&FD programs . One that I still love is one the did at last season's Latch. From kneeling transition to twizzles...still boggles my mind how they keep in sync and with power too.

      Delete
    2. I don't think the same pressure was put on twizzles early in their career. Twizzles were just, stay on your feet, don't botch the features, and achieve unison. The end. Get through them, IOW, was the thing.

It was only semi recently that the guy had to do a twizzle set in unison with his partner. Go back a little earlier and there's no twizzle set - the woman is twizzling like crazy under the arm of the guy and that's that. Just having a set of two in unison with the man executing twizzles in "unison" with the woman was enough innovation and excitement for quite some time, even after VM became seniors. I put "unison" in quotes because for a long time the guy partner should have only been earning effort points if the scoring were legit.

Go back to 2006 and Navka/Kostomarov at the Olympics - Kostomorav comes off like he only sort of learned to twizzle the week before (by the way, that is
a terrible program with more pulling, lifting, dragging and posing than skating, although Navka does do a ton of under his arm twizzles. I think Pasha Grishuk made female ice dancers think that was all there was to ice dance for awhile.)

As far as I'm concerned, I've already seen P/C's Moonlight Sonata - in fact I'm sure I have. I'm curious as to how they'll get around doing latin rhythms in their sd.

I think VM did the first really interesting twizzle transition with their Mahler twizzles that traveled in both directions across the middle of the rink and had ina bauers in between.

  11. what i find so objectionable about the fuss over D/W and now P/C is the fact that NO ONE acknowledges that tessa, unlike any other woman except natalie and maia shib and maybe weaver, participates in the lifts. she is not manhandled and thrown over scott's shoulder. she's not a potato sack. i find that this fact is totally missing from the commentary re VM. what other woman does so much in lifting/supporting herself during the lifts? none.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Alexandra Paul was also among the most capable of participating in and supporting herself in lifts, but of course she now is retired, and of course had a strong dance background which helped. I think across the field, more females in ice dance than just a few are decent at it, but among the "elite" and therefore the ones who get the most attention and points -- nope.

Another problem is unintentionally ugly positioning, like Piper and now Olivia Smart. They look more active in their lifts than a Gabi or Meryl, but are incapable of holding their limbs with grace or purpose.

      Delete
    2. Even Maia Shibutani doesn't carry her weight as perfectly as Tessa when Tessa changes positions in any lift. There is minimal assist from Scott. The Shibs are wonderful, but you can see more effort - even though it's fast and accurate. Scott and Tessa have reached the point where they don't do more than what's necessary - they understand and can execute the mechanics of a lift so well they've reduced the mechanics part to the absolute essentials and no more. I especially noticed an increased relaxation in Scott's shoulders. His core strength and edge security / technique was always stellar.

      Delete
    3. Madison Hubbell is also very good in lifts. H/D are both very tall with very long limbs, so physics prevents them from doing super acrobatic lifts, but they execute the lifts they do very well. To put it quite simply, because of the height, if they both weren't participating in lifts, they wouldn't happen. Madison is a very lean, fit athlete, but there is no throwing her around like a sack of potatoes.

If Madison didn't do her part, Zach would struggle mightily in lifts as he did at SOI back in the spring when lifting the one and only Meryl Davis in a group number. I was able to attend one of the US SOI shows in the spring, and there was a moment I wish could have recorded and shown as an educational film to demonstrate how important the woman's role is in the lifts. Zach easily lifted his own 5' 9" partner. In a same/similar, not so complicated lift, he struggled with Meryl. He definitely was not used to having to heave like a lumberjack when executing a lift.

      Delete
    4. Lifts have very little to do with weight. It's not as if this hasn't been pointed out repeatedly, as well as illustrated, but it's disregarded.

      Delete
    5. One more thing, as nice as the Shib's rotational lifts are, they do rely upon velocity and momentum to achieve the rotational speed and power. As did VM in the past. Now VM hardly need to build up anything before pivoting into a lift and achieving speed and power.

I'm with 3:16. What did that skate look like for them to take hits on levels on French Masters. That they did not come out of there with a perfect score should be telling people something. It's also telling that the French Fed said no clips. A few seconds showed up as part of a French Tv broadcast, and they looked terrible.

    4. I think 'no clips' + guest ISU judges = P/C getting as much feedback before they unleash their programs publicly.

OC posted earlier, "Somebody who is reporting from the celestial inner sanctum of Gadbois where P/C are training said that he learned V/M haven't been there in forever. What a surprise." V/M already have videos on Youtube and elsewhere because of ACI. If what that 'insider' said is true, then those videos will give the French camp a good idea how much prepared the Canadians are at this stage in the game and adjust (skating-wise and politics-wise) before Finlandia.

      Delete
    5. @7:37pm it was same scoring at Masters (for P/C) like last season. True test (judging wise) will be when they come head to head with V/M at NHK comp. Ranting about their perceived higher score over V/M is a waste of breath. It's out of our hands.

      Delete
    6. What ACI really did was give the French camp a good idea of how many fathoms better VM are and always have been than P/C. Last season their programs were constructed with one hand behind the programs' backs. Maybe it gave the French camp a false idea as to what VM were actually capable of. This year VM have been let off the chain. I'd be regrouping as well, but I'd need a ton of politics and a lot of choreographic sleight of hand to even pretend to be competitive. Don't know if either politics or choreographic "effectiveness" (as opposed to actual content) is working for them this season, not even to help them win over teams who aren't VM.

      Delete
    7. Not to mention that from that small clip of P/C it's going to be an apples to apples comparison with VM. A very very tough sell since VM's skating is enormous. I'm going to mix analogies, but I was watching a (literal) horse race a few years ago and the announcer said that this one horse in the race looked like all the others' father. VM in the short makes P/C look like novices - very small skating. And it's not hip hop versus swing, so the comparison is really damning.

Noooo at that Navka/Kostomarov program. So clunky, no finesse at all. So much Russian campiness masquerading as artistry. The difference between 2006 and 2010 Olympic gold medal performances was staggering. Light years. Actually, most ice dance programs at the 2006 Olympics were ugly as hell.

The criticism that VM were "vulgar" or overstated goes out the window with Gabi channeling Charo. The criticism that VM's fd ends with a whimper (as if programs need to always end with a bang) falls apart after viewing the flatline that is P/C's free.

I'm glad the Latin song thing has disappeared - the ignorance was frustrating. It's rhythm, not freaking THEME or the genre of the professional performers whose music is used for the programs.

    5. While P/C do employ tricks to "get around" actually skating in their programs, I still think D/W were worse.

    6. My first impression of Ed Sheeran was when "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" sent up "Thinking out Loud" with a number called "Let's Have Intercourse" featuring hilarious lyrics. Hadn't heard his stuff before then and he didn't have a prayer after that.

  14. OC did you see the post skate interview of their FD? They know they were robbed of points again..."I guess we left technical marks .."

    1. I did, but Tessa didn't look happy at the conclusion of the fd. Scoring isn't going to mean much at this stage.

  15. Just watched P/C's FD from the Masters. It looks so competition ready because it's the same crap "lyrical" program that we've seen 4 seasons in a row. It was skated well but I think that's the case when there is barely any diffulty in the choreography. I am convinced I can take any of their FDs, change the music from another one of their FDs and it would all look one in the same.

V/M's FD needs some work and that's great. To me there is so much potential for growth. P/C look as if they've showed us exactly what we'll see in February.

    1. Yup. But V/M's scoring is more realistic. And yes, Their FD may need work but I think it's way more memorable and have an impact. Better to climb with improvements with each comp. than having one competition scored so high, then go to the next and be rated what it should be. Had to laugh this time, not.one.peep about overscoring. Blatantly obvious that this is only reserved for V/M. So typical ...

    2. They (French Fed) want to set up so it's irrefutable to those who don't really understand ice dance in the first place. What V/M is doing vs P/C is miles apart in terms of their skating skills and versatility. End of story

    3. That's a terrible fd - incredibly empty.
